Vegan shopping in Israel: a practical guide for visitors

A supermarket visit is easier when you can recognise a few Hebrew words and have two or three meals in mind. This guide is for visitors, new arrivals and anyone buying food in Israel without fluent Hebrew. Start with everyday ingredients; specialist substitutes can be an addition rather than the whole shopping list.

Read the product, not just the brand

Look for an explicit vegan statement on the exact item, then check the ingredients and preparation instructions. Israel’s Vegan Friendly programme labels qualifying products. A company participating in the programme may also sell non-vegan products, so check the particular pack. Official labelling information.

Vegetarian does not necessarily mean vegan. Likewise, pareve is a kosher classification, not a vegan certification: a pareve product can contain eggs. Do not use “dairy-free” as your only test.

Keep this Hebrew shopping glossary on your phone

טבעוני — vegan (tivoni). רכיבים — ingredients. חלב — milk. ביצים — eggs. דבש — honey. דגים — fish. מכיל — contains. עלול להכיל — may contain. Show staff this question: האם יש במוצר רכיבים מן החי? — Does this product contain animal-derived ingredients? If the answer is uncertain, contact the manufacturer.

Build a small basket around your accommodation

With a kitchen, consider rice or potatoes, lentils or chickpeas, tofu, vegetables, fruit and tahini. With only a fridge, choose suitable ready-to-eat items and check whether they require cooking. Without refrigeration, buy quantities you can use promptly and follow storage instructions. These are practical shopping ideas, not an individual nutrition plan.

Compare price per 100 grams and the number of usable portions. A dry mix and a chilled product can have very different prepared yields. For plant-based cheese, choose for the intended job—spreading, cooking or melting—rather than assuming all alternatives behave alike.

Plan deliveries before you order

Check that the seller serves your address and that someone can receive the order. If staying at a hotel or apartment, confirm its delivery arrangements first. Verify opening hours and delivery slots for the actual day, particularly around weekends and holidays. A product listed online is not proof of stock in a particular shop.

If you are buying for someone else

Ask about preferences and allergies separately. Vegan labelling does not mean allergen-free. Keep the packaging or a photograph so your guest can check the exact ingredients. Your useful final checklist is simple: correct item, clear ingredients, suitable storage, confirmed stock and a meal you will actually make.
