Vegan clothing materials: how to check more than the outer fabric

A label saying “leather-free” answers only one question. Shoes, coats and bags can combine outer fabric, lining, padding, trim and adhesives. This guide gives you a practical sequence for checking a product, including useful Hebrew terms when shopping in Israel.

    Recognise animal-derived materials

Leather, suede, wool, silk, fur, down and feathers are animal-derived. Cashmere, mohair and angora are not vegan substitutes for wool. On Hebrew labels, look for עור (leather), זמש (suede), צמר (wool), משי (silk) and נוצות (feathers). The Vegan Society’s fashion guidance.

A promising fabric is only the first step

Cotton and linen are plant fibres; polyester and nylon are synthetic fibres. These can be starting points for animal-free choices, but the outer fabric does not describe every component. Read blended-fibre percentages and ask about lining, padding, patches and decorative trim.

    For footwear, check three areas

Read the upper, lining and sole information separately. If the retailer only describes a synthetic upper, ask whether the whole model—including adhesives and finishes—is vegan. A clear statement about the exact model or relevant certification is more useful than a general category label. Vegan shopping guidance.

Vegan, recycled and plant-based are different claims

Vegan describes the animal-origin question. Recycled describes a material’s source. Plant-based does not necessarily mean entirely plant-derived. Ask for the composition and the role of coatings or binders instead of treating these words as interchangeable. A vegan claim alone also does not establish durability or environmental performance.

A message to send before buying

“I am interested in this exact model and colour. Are all components vegan, including lining, padding, adhesives and finishes? Is there a manufacturer statement or certification covering this model? Please also share the complete material composition and care instructions.”

When contacting an Israeli retailer, you can add: האם כל חלקי הדגם טבעוניים, כולל דבקים ובטנה? — Are all parts of this model vegan, including adhesives and lining? Keep the reply with the product link; a statement about one model should not be applied to an entire brand.

    Choose clarity over guesswork

If an answer covers only the main fabric, ask a follow-up rather than filling the gaps yourself. Compare care requirements, fit and intended use once the material question is resolved. Product photographs can help with shape, but they cannot prove what an adhesive or lining contains.

  • Israeli vegan brands to know: pantry ideas and everyday bags

Israeli vegan brands to know: pantry ideas and everyday bags

For an international reader, “Israeli brand” does not automatically mean “made in Israel” or “available in my country”. This introduction separates those questions. The three businesses below offer useful starting points for exploring food and accessories; it is not a ranking or a hands-on review.

Creative Pea: a different pantry format

Creative Pea’s BEEFFREE range includes pea-protein dry mixes for meat alternatives. Unlike a ready-made chilled product, a mix needs preparation according to the particular pack. Check added ingredients, hydration instructions and prepared yield. Official product range.

If you are comparing it with a familiar product at home, compare prepared portions rather than powder weight alone. A product sold through an Israeli website is not evidence that it can be delivered to your country.

Chilla: vegan bags with everyday uses

Chilla describes its bags as 100% vegan and offers backpacks, shoulder bags and accessories. For a work bag, start with the actual dimensions of your laptop, the pocket arrangement and the carrying style you need. Brand website.

A brand’s vegan statement is not our durability test, and a local brand name does not establish where every model is manufactured. Ask about the exact model if manufacturing location matters to your purchase.

KANTERO: local production as part of the story

KANTERO says its bags are vegan and handmade in Israel. Its website describes faux-leather fabrics and microfibre, and offers studio visits in Tel Aviv by prior arrangement. Confirm the model and appointment before travelling there. Official website and FAQ.

Buying from abroad: questions before checkout

Ask whether the retailer ships to your exact destination, what delivery includes, and how returns work from your country. Do not assume an Israeli domestic delivery offer applies internationally. Confirm the current product price and any destination-specific costs before ordering.

For a useful enquiry, include the product link and ask: Does the vegan claim cover every component? Where is this model made? Can you deliver to my location, and what are the return arrangements? Specific answers are more helpful than broad claims about an entire brand.

  • Vegan shopping in Israel: a practical guide for visitors

Vegan shopping in Israel: a practical guide for visitors

A supermarket visit is easier when you can recognise a few Hebrew words and have two or three meals in mind. This guide is for visitors, new arrivals and anyone buying food in Israel without fluent Hebrew. Start with everyday ingredients; specialist substitutes can be an addition rather than the whole shopping list.

Read the product, not just the brand

Look for an explicit vegan statement on the exact item, then check the ingredients and preparation instructions. Israel’s Vegan Friendly programme labels qualifying products. A company participating in the programme may also sell non-vegan products, so check the particular pack. Official labelling information.

Vegetarian does not necessarily mean vegan. Likewise, pareve is a kosher classification, not a vegan certification: a pareve product can contain eggs. Do not use “dairy-free” as your only test.

Keep this Hebrew shopping glossary on your phone

טבעוני — vegan (tivoni). רכיבים — ingredients. חלב — milk. ביצים — eggs. דבש — honey. דגים — fish. מכיל — contains. עלול להכיל — may contain. Show staff this question: האם יש במוצר רכיבים מן החי? — Does this product contain animal-derived ingredients? If the answer is uncertain, contact the manufacturer.

Build a small basket around your accommodation

With a kitchen, consider rice or potatoes, lentils or chickpeas, tofu, vegetables, fruit and tahini. With only a fridge, choose suitable ready-to-eat items and check whether they require cooking. Without refrigeration, buy quantities you can use promptly and follow storage instructions. These are practical shopping ideas, not an individual nutrition plan.

Compare price per 100 grams and the number of usable portions. A dry mix and a chilled product can have very different prepared yields. For plant-based cheese, choose for the intended job—spreading, cooking or melting—rather than assuming all alternatives behave alike.

    Plan deliveries before you order

Check that the seller serves your address and that someone can receive the order. If staying at a hotel or apartment, confirm its delivery arrangements first. Verify opening hours and delivery slots for the actual day, particularly around weekends and holidays. A product listed online is not proof of stock in a particular shop.

If you are buying for someone else

Ask about preferences and allergies separately. Vegan labelling does not mean allergen-free. Keep the packaging or a photograph so your guest can check the exact ingredients. Your useful final checklist is simple: correct item, clear ingredients, suitable storage, confirmed stock and a meal you will actually make.
